Pushing Material Design Forward

According to material.io Google’s Material Design is: a unified system that combines theory, resources, and tools for crafting digital experiences. It’s getting harder these days to ignore it’s subtle influence on UX/UI design. Material Design’s guidelines have lead to more website’s that present clean spaces and utilize a lot of negative space to maximum effect. In the responsive world we live in today MD’s guidelines have proved to be useful for digital (both web and app) based components such as buttons, drop downs and switches which need to work well on tablets as well as phones and monitors.

Gretel nicht Hansel

We just listened to the Design Matters podcast in which Debbie Millman discusses branding with designers Greg Hahn and Ryan Moore who work at Gretel. It gave us some great insight into how they think, develop ideas and creatively engage audiences with out of the box ideas. A worthy listen for just about anyone interested in design. You can listen to the podcast here or read more about how their company rebranded Netflix.

David Bowie Is…

This is really big news if your a David Bowie fanatic and Chris Hess of Hess Design Solutions is just that. The V&A Museum has been granted access to the David Bowie Archive to curate the first international retrospective of the career of David Bowie. David Bowie remains one of the most pioneering and influential performers of our time. The exhibit contains more than three hundred objects, including handwritten lyrics, costumes, photos, set designs, album artwork, and rare performance material from over five decades all brought together from the David Bowie Archive for the first time.

Hartmut Esslinger + Strategic Design = Positive Change

Hartmut Esslinger, founder of Frog Design, is undoubtedly one of the world’s most influential designers.  Mr. Esslinger explains how ‘strategic design’ in business and society can and must bring about positive change through innovative creativity with a newly released book titled “Design Forward”.  This innovative progression Mr. Esslinger speaks of has sparked creative change in the consumer market, especially for one of the most successful American companies ever built: Apple. We here at Hess Design Solutions love our Apple products and while we haven’t done as much packaging design work as we would have liked to we are constantly fascinated with the it’s creation, especially the prototypical stages where ideas begin to materialize from the abstract.

Hess Design Solutions wishes you a Happy X-mas!

We here at Hess Design Solutions stumbled upon this Christmas Gifts or Gifs recently and felt we had to share this with everyone. The web site is a quirky GIF art showcase comprised of submissions from international illustrators, animators and directors. This whimsical project was curated by Ryan Todd and built by Enjoy This. And all the while we thought the Graphics Interchange Format was dead, little did we know.

Time-lapsed Airplanes Landing!

We found this story on Designboom and we could not resist reposting it. American film professor and photographer Cy Kuckenbaker has captured every airplane that landed at san diego international airport a week ago between the hours of 10:30am and 3pm in a time-lapse video. the concept was born from an image by ho-yeol ryu at hannover airport – showing a herd of the massive machines in one visualization and Kuckenbaker wanted to capture the unusual flight path that brings planes very low right over the center of the city of san diego, causing them to drop behind a hill the make the runway. to create the video he would shoot the planes on a cloudless day individually then isolate the image of the plane and composite each one together in a timeline with adobe premier.

Death Grips & Galen Pehrson Collaboration = AWESOME!

Sacramento, California based experimental rap group Death Grips recently got together for The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles with animator Galen Pherson for a collaborative multimedia piece titled “True Vulture. Mr. Pehrson has hand-drawn an animated storyboard to go along with the Death Grips track “True Vulture”. The “True Vulture” project also includes a voiceover by actress Jena Malone (Into the WildSucker Punch). We think it’s an awesome piece of Art reminiscent of the 1970’s children’s show The Electric Company. Enjoy!

Shaken, not stirred.

As I recently exited a Metro station in Paris and I saw in front of me a door sized LED bilboard in front of me, there stood Javier Bardem with bleached blond hair, he slowly turned and stared at me (goosebumps).

Sold.

“Bond, James Bond.” I don’t know, it’s probably just the kid in me but I think those three words were some of the coolest ever captured on the silver screen. And Sean Connery, what’s not to like about that charming man’s man? The coolest secret agent ever conceived. Bond plays it cool, calm and collected always managing to thrill and entertaining. Never forgetting the gorgeous women; James Bond spends almost all his precious free time to get intimate with some of the most beautiful women in the world. Yes, I am excited to see the new 007 movie but even more excited about the release of a new book title “The James Bond Archives” by EON Archives and edited by Paul Duncan.

Elegantissima: The Design and Typography of Louise Fili

Louise Fili has long been an inspiration for a wide variety of designers the world over since the 80’s, at least those that produce packaging art and book cover design, as she created close to two thousand jackets as the art director for Pantheon Books. By 1989 Louise founded her own graphic design studio, Louise Fili Ltd, and stretched out into the fields of restaurant design and food packaging. Her rich and elegant typography, most often hand drawn, helps advertise and market such well-known brands as Bella Cucina, Jean-Georges, and Good Housekeeping, among a multitude of others.
