Discount stores rarely put to much thought into house product packaging. When they do, designs are often uninspiring and well, generic. This tends to make you more hesitant about trying that brand which involves a search for origin (think Aldi and Trader Joe’s). The combination of a re-brand and packaging redesign can increase that products sales and Target seems to agree.

Hartmut Esslinger, founder of Frog Design, is undoubtedly one of the world’s most inﬂuential designers. Mr. Esslinger explains how ‘strategic design’ in business and society can and must bring about positive change through innovative creativity with a newly released book titled “Design Forward”. This innovative progression Mr. Esslinger speaks of has sparked creative change in the consumer market, especially for one of the most successful American companies ever built: Apple. We here at Hess Design Solutions love our Apple products and while we haven’t done as much packaging design work as we would have liked to we are constantly fascinated with the it’s creation, especially the prototypical stages where ideas begin to materialize from the abstract.
Ever heard of a company named Kid Robot? Are you into collectable Art toys? To be honest, we here at Hess Design Solutions have seen their toys here and there; I guess we never really gave them much thought. And we should have. Turns out these folks have a generous cult following and they claim to be the world’s premier creator of limited edition art toys and apparel. Could toys really be any more creative than theirs? We think not.
The folks behind HunterGatherer (founded by Todd St. John) are always moving the goal posts with a very unique “hands-on” approach to design, illustration, and animation. HunterGatherer have been around since 2000 and I think the first time I became aware of HunterGatherer was their cover art they did for Money Mark’s “Brand New By Tomorrow” LP. The studio’s work has been frequently published and exhibited. HunterGatherer has won awards from multiple design organizations, and Todd St. John was included along with collaborator Gary Benzel in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Triennial: Design Now.
Louise Fili has long been an inspiration for a wide variety of designers the world over since the 80’s, at least those that produce packaging art and book cover design, as she created close to two thousand jackets as the art director for Pantheon Books. By 1989 Louise founded her own graphic design studio, Louise Fili Ltd, and stretched out into the fields of restaurant design and food packaging. Her rich and elegant typography, most often hand drawn, helps advertise and market such well-known brands as Bella Cucina, Jean-Georges, and Good Housekeeping, among a multitude of others.
